Brita Large 10-Cup Water Filter Pitcher with SmartLight and 1 Standard Filter, Bright White

A fridge-door-sized pour-through pitcher; this entry looks up exactly what the Standard filter in the box is certified to reduce, what it is not certified for, and what it costs to keep filters in it.

The short version

  • A 10-cup Brita "Everyday" pitcher (system model OB46) that ships with one Standard filter, model OB03, rated for 40 gallons, or about two months in Brita's estimate.
  • $28.18 on Sep 30, 2026, sold by Amazon.com. A 6-pack of Standard filters was $29.68 the same day, which is roughly one year of filters at Brita's schedule.
  • WQA certifies this pitcher-and-filter pair to NSF/ANSI 42 (chlorine taste and odor, zinc) and NSF/ANSI 53 (cadmium, copper, mercury). Lead is not on the Standard filter's list.

What the spec sheet shows

We read the Amazon listing for ASIN B0B3GS15GL, Brita's performance data sheet for the Standard filter, and Brita's pitcher setup page, all on Sep 30, 2026. The listing's model field reads "Everyday," model number OB46/OB03: OB46 is the pitcher and OB03 is the filter. Brita now sells the white Standard filter under the name "Original," and the box in the listing photo says "Brita Original." It is the same OB03 cartridge.

What the standards and sources say

A filter is "certified" only if a third-party certifier lists that model. We checked two certifier databases on Sep 30, 2026. NSF's own drinking-water listing for the company name "Brita" shows, among pitchers, only the Elite filter (OB06) in two other pitchers, alongside plumbed-in filters listed under BRITA SE of Germany; the Standard filter is not there [3]. The certifier for this filter is the Water Quality Association (WQA). Its Gold Seal database lists the "Everyday" pitcher, model OB46, with replacement element OB03 and a 40-gallon capacity, under two standards [1][2]:

  • NSF/ANSI 42 (aesthetic effects): aesthetic chlorine, taste and odor, and zinc [1].
  • NSF/ANSI 53 (health effects): cadmium, copper and mercury [2].

Brita's performance data sheet for the OB03 filter matches that list and names OB46 among the covered pitchers. In Brita's lab test data the filter reduced chlorine by 95%, zinc by 64%, cadmium by 91–94%, copper by 73–89% and mercury by 82–86%, depending on the pH of the test water. Each result was measured at a set challenge level, and the sheet says real-world results will vary [4]. Brita's own wording is "reduce," not "remove." The data sheet also says the Standard filter is not intended to purify water and should not be used with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality [4].

What is not on the Standard filter's certification: lead, NSF/ANSI 401 compounds (such as microplastics), and the longer NSF/ANSI 53 list of organic chemicals. In WQA's database, for the same OB46 pitcher, lead and the NSF/ANSI 401 microplastics claim attach to the Elite filter (OB06), and longer lists of organic chemicals attach to the Elite and to the newer Brita+ filter (OB08); none of them attach to OB03 [2][7]. Our explainer on water filter certifications walks through how to read these listings.

Before you buy

Start with what is in your water. Your utility's annual water quality report, or a lab test for a private well, tells you whether chlorine, copper or something else is the issue. If your question is lead or another contaminant not on the list above, this filter is not certified for it. Look for a filter whose certifier listing names that contaminant, and ask your water utility or local health department if you have a health concern.

How to set it up and keep it up

This is Brita's own setup and upkeep routine, summarized from its support pages and the data sheet.

  1. Wash, rinse, insert day one

Hand-wash the pitcher, lid and reservoir with mild dish soap and rinse well. Rinse the white Standard filter under cold water for 15 seconds, line up its groove with the ridge in the reservoir, and press it firmly into place.

  2. Reset the SmartLight day one

On the 10-cup lid, turn the lid over and hold the button under the white-filter mark for at least 5 seconds until the light flashes three times. Brita notes that a fill only counts if the lid stays open for at least 10 seconds.

  3. Discard the first three pitchers day one

Fill with cold tap water and pour out the first three pitchers of filtered water, or use them on plants. Brita says a little carbon dust in the first few fills is normal.

  4. Hand-wash the pitcher every week or two

Brita says to wash the pitcher periodically, by hand, with no abrasive cleaners. How often is up to you; we'd do it every week or two. Keep the pitcher in the fridge, since only cold water (no warmer than 85°F) should go through this filter.

  5. Change the filter every 40 gallons (~2 months)

Change the filter when the light turns red at 40 gallons, or sooner with hard water or heavy use. Repeat the rinse and reset each time.

Price and where it is sold

On Sep 30, 2026 the listing showed the 10-cup Bright White pitcher with one Standard filter at $28.18, shipped and sold by Amazon.com, In Stock, with a free 30-day refund or replacement return window. The same day, a Brita 6-pack of Standard (OB03) replacement filters was $29.68 on Amazon, also sold by Amazon.com. At six filters a year, that is about $30 a year in filters on top of the pitcher. Brita's data sheet also mentions a 30-day money-back guarantee from Brita itself. Prices change; read these as a snapshot.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Anyone who specifically wants lead reduction. The Standard filter is not certified for it; the Elite filter (OB06) carries that claim for this pitcher in WQA's listing. Check the listing again before buying.
  • Households that drink more than about 2 gallons of filtered water a day. The data sheet caps daily throughput there, so a faucet-mount or under-sink filter may suit you better.
  • Anyone on a private well, or with water of unknown quality. Brita says this filter is not meant for water that is microbiologically unsafe. Test first and talk to your local health department.
  • Anyone with a health question about their tap water. Ask your water utility, local health department or a clinician; a pitcher filter is not a substitute for that advice.
